the world's largest piranha was found in Devon river

0c
A giant piranha – the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world – has been found in a Devon river, the Environment Agency said today. Bathers in the UK's rivers and streams should be reassured that the fish was dead and is thought to have been an abandoned pet. Its discovery will add, however, to experts' anxieties about non-native wildlife being introduced to the UK.

The fish, of a species more accustomed to the Amazon river basin, was discovered in the river Torridge by Environment Agency workers conducting a wildlife survey. Eddie Stevens, one of the three-man monitoring team, said they were left open-mouthed by their discovery.

"What we actually came across was something which we would not expect to find in our wildest dreams. We could hardly believe our eyes," he said.

Used to more temperate climes, the fish probably could not tolerate the cold waters, the agency said. A closer examination revealed that its stomach was full of sweetcorn – further evidence it may have been kept as a domestic pet.

At a length of 36cm (14in), the red-bellied piranha was a giant of its kind – more than eight inches longer than an average specimen. The team first spotted its tail sticking out of an undercut bank on the far side of the river. "Our first thought was that a sea trout had become lodged in amongst the rocks and debris collected under the bank," Stevens said. "But when it was removed from the river we were speechless to find it was a piranha."

The introduction of non-native species poses a serious threat to native wildlife, according to the agency. Mark Diamond, an ecology manager, said: "Whilst piranhas can't survive the colder climates of the UK, this latest find highlights a real issue – that releasing unwanted exotic pets or plants into rivers can have serious consequences for native wildlife. "Rather than dumping things in the wild, we would urge people to seek advice about what to do with exotic species."

Australia monster hunt

From the depths of time it comes from the ocean, gliding up waterways to lay its eggs then slipping silently away again - this is Sydney's own "Nessie''.

Cryptozoologist Rex Gilroy said he recently saw the 12m giant surface in the Hawkesbury River. Through binoculars Mr Gilroy saw a dark shadow ``with a longish neck'' near Wiseman's Ferry.

Mr Gilroy, who has been searching for Sydney's beast since 1965, said he believed it was a plesiosaur from the Jurassic period. Mr Gilroy, known for his research on the western Sydney panther, said neither the NSW nor Scottish Nessies were alone.

"We'd have to have a breeding population of no less than 300 to 600," he said. "We're dealing with ocean creatures coming into the river to breed. There are areas of ocean ... anything could live down there and you wouldn't know it.''

After hearing of the Hawkesbury Monster in 1965 he found accounts dating back to pre-colonial times, with stories told of children being attacked by the ``moolyewonk''.

When fishing boats were found overturned and the occupants missing in the 1980s, the Hawkesbury Monster was the prime suspect. "We have rock art depicting them. It seems the Aboriginal people knew of these creatures," Mr Gilroy said

people crying out blood

A Tennessee boy has reported bleeding from his eyes several times a day and the condition has baffled his doctors. Calvino Inman, 15, says the bleeding happens at least three times a day and can last anywhere from a few minutes up to an hour.

"Sometimes, I can feel it coming up, like a tear. I feel my eyes watering, Sometimes, it will burn as it comes out," Inman said. "I've been called possessed by almost all of my friends. I guess I'm used to it now. At first, it kind of hurt my feelings."

Tammy Mynatt, the boy's mother, says she called paramedics the first time she saw blood running from her son's eyes. "The scariest thing in my life is when he looked at me and said 'Mom, am I going to die?' That right there broke my heart," Mynatt said.

"They done an MRI, they done a CAT scan, they done it with and without an IV, they've done ultra sounds."

The oldest couple in the world

0c
One half of Britain's longest married couple has died at the Plymouth residential home where he lived with his wife of 81 years.

Frank Milford met Anita, both 101, at a YMCA dance in Plymouth, Devon, in 1926 and they married two years later. The couple said the secret of their marriage was "give and take" and making up after rows with a kiss and cuddle.

Mr Milford's 76-year-old son, who is also called Frank, said his mother was holding his father's hand when he died. "She's very upset obviously, but she was sitting holding his hand when he passed away," he said.

"For the past three weeks or so he hasn't been eating or drinking and I think we all realised he was ready to die. He knew it was his time and I think he simply died of old age."

Despite his frailty, Mr Milford said his father had remained "as sharp as a tack" and never lost his sense of humour.

In February 2010 the couple would have broken the record to become the oldest married couple in Britain.

Swedish men breastfeeding her child

0c
Swedish father Ragnar Bengtsson, 26, has entered into an experiment that he hopes will help him breastfeed his future children.

The Stockholm family man has begun stimulating his breasts with a pump in a bid to produce milk.

"Anything that doesn't do any harm is worth trying out. And if it works it could prove very important for men's ability to get much closer to their children at an early stage," Bengtsson said.

Bengtsson is preparing to pump his breasts at three-hour intervals every day until the beginning of December. As a full time economics student at Stockholm University, he is not always going to be in a position to pump in private.

"I'm going to have to pull out the pump during lectures. But really it doesn't bother me if it makes people uncomfortable. If they have issues with it that's their problem," he said.

Male lactation is a relatively common side effect of hormone treatments, but Bengtsson has no plans to chemically induce the process. "If it works and the milk turns out to have a high nutritional value it could be a real breakthrough," he said.

china farmers harvest baby-shaped pears

0c
A Chinese farmer is cashing in after managing to grow pears in the shape of babies.

Gao Xianzhang, of Hexia village in northern China's Hebei province, puts moulds on the fruit growing on the tree. And he says that after six years he has perfected his technique.

This year, he harvested more than 10,000 baby-shaped pears and sold them for the equivalent of £5 each.

Gao said: "I noticed people were selling shaped water melons for a good price, so I thought of doing something similar with my pears.

"It was more difficult than I expected. You have to test when the best time is to put the moulds on the pears is, and when to take them off again.

"If you leave the moulds on for too long, the pears start to rot inside. But I managed to work out the best way through trial and error."

women with the biggest thighs

1c

Men and women with thighs over 60cm (23.6in) in circumference have a lower risk of heart disease and early death, a study of 3,000 people suggests.

The relationship remains even when body fat, smoking and blood cholesterol are taken into account, a Danish team says.

Those with narrow thighs may not have enough muscle mass to deal with insulin properly, raising the risk of diabetes and, in turn, heart disease, they say.
